The South Tyrolean Museum of History and Culture in Tirolo was opened in 2003 in the ancestral Tyrol Castle, the castle of the Counts of Tyrol.
The archaeological part of the museum inside the castle offers many finds concerning human settlement in the region dating back to the 7th century B.C.
An interactive tour through the castle complex, with its centuries-long history, illustrates the important themes of the region's past, its art and social history and everyday life during the Middle Ages.
Each room is devoted to a specific theme, from prehistory through daily life in the Middle Ages, up to the recollections of the 20th century.
The castle tower is dedicated to the modern era and the eventful history of the region between 1898 and 1992.
In the keep visitors are given a detailed account of salient moments of the 20th century: multimedia stations, audio and video guides and an extensive collection of contemporary documents describe the long road leading to South Tyrol's autonomy.
The permanent exhibition is added to each year, with rotating special exhibitions taking place for a limited period of time.
